Social Democratic Union (Socijaldemokratska unija) was founded in 1996 by former members of the Civic Alliance of Serbia (Gradjanski savez Srbije) who had opposed that party's joining the Together (Zajedno) coalition.

According to Radomir Vuković (Patria Partija, Kvadart (Belgrade), #5, p. 14, 1996, the logotype of the party was adopted in 1996 and was created by Ivan Valenčak, a designer from Belgrade. The logotype is a stylized rose composed of letters: the flower consists of the interlaced party name initials SDU in red colour and the leaves consist of the full party name, inscribed in three lines in blue colour, both I letters being enlarged so as to form the stem. The party flag is white with a vertical red stripe along the hoist and the party logotype in the centre of the white field. Its first appearances which I have recorded were at the rallies of the Democratic Opposition of Serbia in Belgrade, on 14 April 2000 and 15 May 2000, but it must have been adopted earlier. The flag is similar to that of the Social Democratic Party of Bosnia and Herzegovina and might be derived from it or from another flag which might have provided the inspiration to both flags' designers. The Social Democratic Union has been using this flag until July 2002, when it was merged into the Social Democratic Party (Socijaldemokratska partija). In March 2003, after a split in this party, the Social Democratic Union was renewed and its flag was brought back into the use.

Social Democratic Youth (Socijaldemokratska omladina) is the youth organization of the Social Democratic Union. Its flag is red with the large logotype in the centre and the full name of the organization in the bottom, all in white. The logotype consists of the initials SDO, the O letter being in the form of a stylized rose. The bottom inscription is in the condensed version of the same typeface which is used for the logotype, so that the both charges have equal widths. All inscriptions are in this typeface (Tahoma) since March 2003, when the Social Democratic Youth, previously merged into the same-named youth organization of the Social Democratic Party, was renewed. Before the said merger in July 2002, the inscriptions had been in a different typeface (Times or very similar) and the rose-shaped O had had a different form (height greater than width) to match the forms of the other two letters in the logotype. This was the design of the flag used at the rallies of the Democratic Opposition of Serbia in Belgrade, on 14 April 2005 and 15 May 2005, which were its first appearances which I have recorded, but it must have been adopted earlier.
